Slight increase in nuclear electricity production in EU in 2023

26/02/2025 (Agence Europe)In 2023, the 13 EU Member States with nuclear electricity production generated 619,601 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity, an increase of 1.7% compared to 2022, “largely due to France completing the maintenance of its nuclear reactors”, Eurostat said in a new publication on Wednesday 26 February. Nuclear power plants in these 13 countries accounted for 22.8% of total electricity production in the EU. The EU’s largest nuclear producer, France, generated 54.6% of the EU’s nuclear power (338,202 GWh). Spain follows with 56,873 GWh (9.2%), ahead of Sweden (48,470 GWh; 7.8%) and Finland (34,308 GWh; 5.5%). Only 1.4% of the electricity generated in Germany and 3.3% in the Netherlands came from nuclear power plants in 2023. (SP)
