Second version of AI Code of Practice struggles to align with AI Act requirements, say MEPs

Brando Benifei (S&D, Italian), co-chair of the working group on the issue, gave MEPs on the Committee on Internal Market (IMCO) an overview of the discussions underway on the drafting of a “General-Purpose AI Code of Practice(see EUROPE 13544/9) on Monday 17 February.

In his view, there are still “serious concerns” about the “transparency” of the data used to train AI models and its accessibility for “downstream suppliers”: “at this stage, it would be very difficult for them to comply with the requirements of the AI Act, given the glaring lack of access to this data”, he said.

We also find it problematic that the assessment of environmental risks and impacts is not seriously taken into account and is only considered as a secondary requirement”, the MEP also regretted.

The issue of respect for and protection of human rights, which has been called for by several interest groups (see EUROPE 13560/6), was also addressed.

According to Brando Benifei, the third version of the text is expected this week. (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
