A third of young Europeans believe that the European Union should focus on the environment and climate change over the next five years, while 31% believe the economic situation and job creation should be priorities, according to the results of the latest Eurobarometer youth survey, conducted for the European Parliament.
Published on Monday 17 February, the data reveals that rising prices and the cost of living are of concern to 40% of the 16–30 year-olds who took part in the surveys.
Three out of ten (29%) expect European policies to focus primarily on social protection, welfare and access to healthcare.
In addition, more than one in five respondents highlighted education and training (27%), housing (23%) and EU defence and security (21%) as top priorities. These priorities vary from region to region, with European defence being a subject of particular concern to young people in the Czech Republic (36%), Poland (33%) and Estonia (32%).
The Eurobarometer youth survey was carried out by Ipsos between 25 September and 3 October 2024 in the 27 EU Member States.
The results will contribute to the European Parliament’s flagship youth event, the sixth edition of the European Youth Event, EYE2025, which will take place on 13 and 14 June 2025 in Strasbourg to address the issues that matter most to the EU’s younger generation.
