20/01/25 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 20 January, the European Commission adopted an implementing regulation authorising the marketing of UV-treated Tenebrio molitor (mealworm) whole larvae powder as a novel food. The EPP and ECR groups in the European Parliament had unsuccessfully proposed objecting to this implementing act (see EUROPE 13559/18), which had already been approved by EU countries in a qualified majority vote on 20 November 2024 in the Standing Committee on Novel Foods. A warning label is provided for people “already allergic to dust mites and shellfish”. Link to the regulation: https://aeur.eu/f/f45 (LC)
