On Wednesday 13 November, the European Commission revealed the winners of the ‘iCapital’ European Capital of Innovation Award. Turin, Italy, won the European Capital of Innovation Award, and Braga, Portugal, won the European Rising Innovative City Award. The city of Turin has been recognised for its approach to experimentation and innovation, and for the way it tackles urban challenges. Braga, for its part, was rewarded for having developed innovative solutions, notably around tech-based clusters. Turin received a €1 million prize and Braga €500,000. In each of these two categories, the Commission also recognised second and third-placed cities: Espoo in Finland and the West Midlands Combined Authority were runners-up to Turin; Linz in Austria and Oulu in Finland were runners-up to Braga.
