On Thursday 14 November, the European Commission published the first draft of its ‘General-Purpose AI Code of Practice’ as set out in the Artificial intelligence Act (AI Act).
This first draft is the result of the work of the four expert groups that make up the AI Office, and is based on contributions gathered during a multi-stakeholder consultation with several suppliers of general-purpose AI models.
The final document is expected to guide the development and deployment of future AI models within the EU to ensure their reliability. It will detail the transparency and copyright rules applicable and, for the most advanced models, the code should also detail a taxonomy of systemic risks and risk assessment measures.
This first draft is due to be discussed at a plenary session to be held from 18 to 21 November, with nearly 1,000 stakeholders, representatives of EU Member States and European and international observers. It must be completed by 1 May 2025.
