23/10/24 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 23 October, the European Commission approved two Swedish tax exemption schemes for non-food biogas and bio-propane used for heating or as motor fuels. In June 2020, the Commission approved the schemes under EU State aid rules, but on 21 December 2022, the General Court of the EU annulled the decisions on procedural grounds. On 29 June 2020, the Commission had authorised the extension of these two Swedish support systems until 31 December 2030. The forecast budget for the period 2021-2030 was €550 million for the heating fuel scheme and €477 million for the motor fuel scheme. Following the Court’s ruling, the Commission launched an in-depth investigation and found the aid to be compatible with EU state aid rules. (LC)
