EU should double rate of growth in renewable capacity between 2024 and 2030

According to the new report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) entitled ‘Renewables 2024’, which analyses the deployment of renewable energy, the world could achieve the target set at COP28 in Dubai of tripling capacity by 2030 (see EUROPE 13313/16) thanks to supportive policies and favourable economic conditions.

The European Union and the United States are expected to double the rate of growth in renewable capacity between 2024 and 2030, while India has the fastest growth rate of any major economy.

China remains in the lead, with an estimated 60% of all renewable capacity installed worldwide by 2030.

The report predicts that global renewable capacity will reach 2.7 times its 2022 level by 2030, but that it is possible to reach the tripling target if governments show ambition and support renewable energy growth in high-potential regions such as Africa and Southeast Asia.

Between 2024 and 2030, the world is expected to add more than 5,500 gigawatts (GW) of new renewable energy capacity, three times the increase seen between 2017 and 2023.
