Meta notably absent among EU AI Pact signatories

On Wednesday 25 September, the European Commission announced that around a hundred companies had signed the ‘EU Artificial Intelligence Pact’ (AI).

This pact supports the industry’s voluntary commitments to start applying the principles of the European regulation on AI (AI Act) before it comes into force.

While Microsoft, Google, Amazon and OpenAI are among the 115 signatories, major companies such as Meta and Mistral do not appear on the list provided by the Commission.

According to a spokesperson for Facebook’s parent company, whose comments were reported by Reuters, the company says it is ready to join the ‘AI Pact’ at a later stage: “We (...) are focusing on our compliance work under the AI Act at this time”, the spokesperson said.

With AI legislation only two years away from coming into force, the European Commission has launched the ‘AI Pact’ to encourage companies using artificial intelligence for their business in Europe to comply quickly.
