MEPs say that in light of major platforms, DSA must move faster and do more

While presenting the latest progress made under the Digital Services Act (DSA), Roberto Viola, Director General of DG CNECT, was called upon by MEPs from the European Parliament’s Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection to take more rapid action against the major platforms, given their capacity for growth.

The two Chinese online sales platforms Temu and Shein, whose number of users exceeded one million in a record space of time, were cited by MEPs as telling examples of the lack of speed in applying the DSA.

“Temu has reached the same number of users in the EU in 6 months as other companies have in 6 years. What can we do to accelerate the pace to make up for the non-compliance of these platforms?”, insisted Sandro Gozi (Renew Europe, Italian), who was visibly concerned about the failings of the Chinese company.

“Temu and Shein have just been designated as major platforms and are being monitored. They must apply the DSA in full, otherwise there will of course be consequences”, replied Roberto Viola. (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
