EU wants to boost development of generative artificial intelligence

On Tuesday 10 September, the European Commission announced that it had launched a call to set up artificial intelligence (AI) factories linked to the network of European high-performance computing supercomputers (known as EuroHPC).

The aim of this initiative, which comes at a time when Mario Draghi’s report on competitiveness has identified AI as a potential growth area for the EU, is to makeEuroHPC’s technological advantages available. Generative AI developers will have access to computing and storage services to train their AI models. These artificial intelligence factories will be ‘networked’ across Europe to provide a collaborative framework for developers.

The call launched today will be open until 31 December 2025, with a first deadline on 4 November 2024 and subsequent deadlines every three months, as long as funds are available.

This call is to be supported by an EU contribution of almost €1 billion from the Digital Europe programme and Horizon Europe, as well as an equal amount of funding from the Member States. (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
