10/09/2024 (Agence Europe) – In a letter sent to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on Friday 6 September, the coalition of environmental NGOs CAN Europe called for the future Executive Vice-President responsible for the social, ecological and digital transition to include the future Commissioner for Energy in her team. CAN Europe welcomes the fact that the potential future Executive Vice-President, Teresa Ribera, who has been approached for the position, is currently in discussions for a “transition” portfolio including “social, ecological and digital”. However, the NGO coalition stresses that “some of the biggest and most pressing just transition challenges are related to the transformation of the energy sector”. It therefore suggests linking the “energy” portfolio to the “transition” portfolio, rather than another portfolio, such as industry, for example.
