On Thursday 5 September, the European Commission announced the arrival of 100,000 doses of mpox vaccine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), making this the first delivery of the vaccine to the African country.
A second shipment of around 100,000 vaccines is expected in the next few days (see EUROPE 13474/15).
These vaccines are part of the 215,000 doses of MVA-BN® vaccine that the Commission’s Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) has acquired and pledged to share with African countries. Through Team Europe, a further 351,500 doses from France, Germany, Spain, Malta, Portugal, Luxembourg, Croatia, Austria, Poland and possibly other Member States will be donated to Africa CDC for distribution to affected countries. This brings the total number of vaccines donated by Team Europe to at least 566,500, including the 215,000 doses donated by HERA in cooperation with the pharmaceutical company Bavarian Nordic.
This initiative is part of a comprehensive set of EU actions under the EU Global Health Strategy. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
