EEB calls on Ursula von der Leyen to implement recommendations of new report on future of agriculture as soon as possible

There is indeed a “broad consensus” on the relationship between global limits and the way we produce and consume food, said Faustine Bas-Defossez, Director of the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) for Nature, Health and Environment, after the publication of the report on a “Strategic Dialogue on the Future of EU Agriculture” on Wednesday 4 September (see EUROPE 13475/1).

Announced by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in September 2023, the ‘strategic dialogue’ between environmental NGOs, farmers’ unions, industry players and consumers began in January 2024, just as farmers’ discontent was becoming apparent.

The report - a “call for change”, according to the EEB - provides recommendations on “substantially increasing funding” for nature- and climate-friendly agriculture, with a focus on results. It suggests rethinking the system for allocating CAP subsidies, which favours the largest farms, by targeting those “who need it most”.

The EEB calls on Ursula von der Leyen to “integrate [these] collective recommendations” in the first 100 days of the new Commission.
