02/09/24 (Agence Europe) – Four European farming organisations, including Copa-Cogeca, are concerned about the ongoing discussions between EU and Mercosur negotiators to finalise the trade agreement. In a 2 September press release, these organisations reiterated their opposition to the free trade agreement between the two regions for various reasons. According to the organisations, “The agreement remains unbalanced in its agricultural chapter, especially affecting already fragile agricultural sectors such as beef, poultry, rice, sugar and ethanol”. These representatives are also concerned about the environmental and phytosanitary chapters. In their view, there is no guarantee that Mercosur’s agricultural exports to the EU will meet the same standards as those imposed on European crops and livestock. This warning comes as a negotiating session is due to be held in Brazil on 5 and 6 September, with negotiators on both sides hoping to reach an agreement soon (see EUROPE 13470/1). (LM)
