22/08/24 (Agence Europe) – “We honour and pay tribute to those who fell victims to totalitarian regimes around the world (...) and to those who continue to stand against such regimes today”. On the eve of the ‘Europe-Wide Day of Remembrance for the victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes’, Vice-President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency Věra Jourová, European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders and European Commissioner for Equality Helena Dalli issued a joint statement on Thursday 22 August. All three call for “preserving historical memory” to leave the horror of crimes committed by totalitarianism in the past and ensure it does not repeat itself in the future. “Democracy is an asset we can’t take for granted”, they warned considering the events of recent years, including the war in Ukraine.
