On Tuesday 16 July, the European Disability Forum (EDF) published a note setting out its recommendations on the ten priorities regarding disability issues for the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Priorities include implementing the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), ratified by the EU at the end of 2010, and developing new initiatives for the EU Disability Rights Strategy 2025-2030.
EDF calls for the appointment of a disability coordinator within the EU Council and active participation in meetings of the Council of the European Union’s Human Rights Committee in preparation for the EU’s review by the CRPD Committee, scheduled for March 2025.
The Forum recommends promoting equal rights, ensuring transparent and participatory decision-making and protecting social rights.
Other recommendations focus on improving freedom of movement and transport accessibility, as well as promoting the rights of people with disabilities worldwide.
The Forum is also calling for the measures in the ‘European Green Deal’ to be inclusive.
