EU sanctions six people involved in cyber attacks

On Monday 24 June, the EU Council approved additional restrictive measures against six people - five Russians and one Ukrainian - involved in cyber attacks affecting information systems linked to critical infrastructures, critical state functions, the storage or processing of classified information and government emergency response teams in EU Member States.

Two members of the ‘Callisto group’, a group of Russian military intelligence officers who conduct cyber operations, Ruslan Peretyatko and Andrey Korinets, are subject to restrictive measures, as are Oleksandr Sklianko and Mykola Chernykh of the ‘Armageddon hacker group’. This group, supported by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), has carried out various cyber attacks on the governments of EU Member States and Ukraine.

Finally, Mikhail Tsarev and Maksim Galochkin, “key players”, according to the EU Council, in the deployment of the Conti and Trickbot malware programs and involved in ‘Wizard Spider’, a group that ran ransomware campaigns, are also subject to sanctions.

The EU’s horizontal cyber sanctions regime now applies to 14 individuals and four entities.
