To mark the International Day against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing, the EU IUU Fishing Coalition, theIUU Forum Japan and theUS IUU Fishing & Labor Rights Coalition on Wednesday 5 June called on the EU, Japan and the United States to join forces to step up the fight against ‘pirate’ fishing and labour abuses in the seafood sector.
These various organisations (Oceana, Pew, WWF, etc.) suggest establishing cooperation to promote transparency in fisheries governance, surveillance at sea (including electronic surveillance and/or observers with guarantees for workers), comprehensive traceability systems for seafood products and mechanisms to enable regional cooperation between ports, coasts and flag states.
“Deliberate collaboration and the exchange of real-time information” will significantly increase the effectiveness and impact of the application of effective measures and inspections by the port State at the point of landing “to deter illicit activities and incentivise the adoption of best practices globally”, according to the requested actions.
