In a joint letter sent to the European Commission on Wednesday 5 June, more than 200 stakeholders in the geothermal sector value chain called for the preparation of a European strategy and action plan for geothermal energy as a major source of renewable heating, cooling and electricity.
The signatories also highlight advantages such as the low cost of energy storage and more sustainable extraction of lithium and other resources.
The stakeholders are therefore calling for a strategy and action plan that includes a target of 250 GW of geothermal energy by 2040 for electricity, heating and cooling (district heating and cooling systems, networked geothermal heat pumps and standalone geothermal heat pumps), the harmonisation and development of new support programmes and the approval of the Geothermal Industrial Alliance.
They also want energy demand and geological data to be more accessible, the skills of workers, municipal network planners and permitting agencies to be further developed, and innovation in Europe’s manufacturing industry to be strengthened.
