European Commission announces contributions of EU countries to eleventh European Development Fund

On Tuesday 4 June, the European Commission submitted to the Member States of the European Union a proposal for an EU Council Decision on the financial contributions to be paid to the eleventh European Development Fund (EDF) under the second instalment for the financial year 2024.

The total amount of this second tranche of contributions is €500 million, of which €73 million is from the United Kingdom, representing around 14.6% of contributions.

With the first (€650 million) and third (€350 million) tranches, the European Commission has announced that the total amount of contributions from EU countries (including contributions to the European Investment Bank) in 2024 will be €1.5 billion.

For 2025, 2026 and 2027, it is estimated at €809 million, €700 million and €500 million respectively.

The eleventh EDF financed European cooperation with developing countries from 2014 to 2020 with a total budget of €30.5 billion. The EDF has been replaced by the European Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI) for the period 2021-2027 (see EUROPE 12737/4).
