According to a legal act published on Friday, 31 May, the European Union has adopted sanctions against six individuals and three entities for their roles in transferring unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to Russia or transferring drones or missiles to armed groups and entities undermining peace and security in the Middle East and the Red Sea region or for their involvement in the Iranian drone programme.
Iranian Minister of Defence Mohammad-Reza Gharaei Ashtiani is thus subject to sanctions, as is the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN), which is involved in delivering Iranian weapons.
The Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters (KCHG), a central entity in the Iranian armed forces’ chain of command that makes operational military decisions concerning the deployment of drones, and Gholamali Rashid, one of its commanders, are being sanctioned, as are Kavan Electronics Behrad LLC, which buys and sells components for manufacturing drones; Hossein Hatefi Ardakani, the chair of the company’s board of directors; and Mehdi Dehghani Mohammadabadi, a member of its board of directors.
Finally, Ismail Qaani, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Qods Force, and Afshin Khaji Fard, the head of the Iranian Aviation Industries Organization, are also subject to measures.
The targeted individuals and entities will be subject to an asset freeze as well as a travel ban to the EU for natural persons. Moreover, providing them with funds or economic resources is prohibited.
