In a joint letter sent on Thursday 30 May, more than fifty civil society players, businesses and organisations representing cities and regions across Europe called on European leaders to make the socially just climate transition a priority of the EU’s 2024-2029 strategic agenda, which will take shape after the European elections.
In this letter addressed to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the Heads of State or Government of the Member States, the signatories recommend that this agenda should “build upon the success of elevating the EU’s transition to a climate-neutral, green, fair and social Europe as a strategic north star”.
They are also calling for public funding, economic governance and an EU budget fit for the future to be part of the agenda, for social and democratic concerns to be taken into account as a matter of urgency, and for international partnerships to be prioritised to promote security and solidarity.
