Brussels, 15/05/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 15 May, King Philippe of Belgium and Queen Mathilde were received by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and by the college of European Commissioners as part of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU. Addressing the Commissioners, the King spoke of the European elections in June, emphasising the fact that they are among the most important and diverse democratic elections in the world. The Belgian King also spoke of the “crucial” work undertaken by the Commission as the guardian of the European Treaties, particularly when faced with threats of foreign interference. On Wednesday 10 April, at the European Parliament, the King of Belgium also called for a Europe that would be “the geopolitical engine of humanity” (see EUROPE 13388/10). (BD)
