02/05/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday, 30 April, the European Commission adopted a proposal to transpose a series of rules issued by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) into EU law. The rules concern the sustainable conservation and management of fisheries as well as technical measures on the sustainable exploitation of European eel and red coral in the area covered by the GFCM Agreement; reducing incidental captures of seabirds, sea turtles, and cetaceans; and the conservation of monk seals, sharks, and rays in the area covered [by the agreement]. Furthermore, the proposal (https://aeur.eu/f/c1d ) transposes measures regarding small pelagic fisheries in the Adriatic Sea, introduces new provisions on sprat and piked dogfish in the Black Sea, and envisages new chapters on transhipments and recreational fishing.
