19/04/24 (Agence Europe) – Italian Ilaria Salis, who has been detained in Hungary for thirteen months on charges of assaulting a neo-Nazi activist, is standing as a candidate in Italy’s European elections on the Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra list. “Her candidacy is a positive symbol for the battle of rule of law and fundamental rights in Europe. We stand with our Italian allies against autocrats like Viktor Orbán and his barbaric methods of detention”, declared David Lundy, spokesperson for The Left in the European Parliament, on Friday 19 April, when Ms Salis appeared in shackles at a judicial hearing. Next week in Strasbourg, Ms Salis’s father will meet representatives of the Greens/EFA Group, including France’s Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield, who is responsible for drafting the European Parliament’s resolution on the respect for the rule of law in Hungary (see EUROPE 13389/16).
