European Commission proposes EU macro-financial assistance for Jordan

On Monday 8 April, the European Commission proposed that the European Union provide macrofinancial assistance of up to €500 million to Jordan.

This aid, which will be provided in the form of loans at preferential rates, will be aimed at supporting Jordan’s public finances as well as structural reforms agreed between the country’s authorities and the EU and set out in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) (tax administration, labour market reform, fight against fraud, corruption and money laundering).

This proposal is “a clear sign of the EU’s continued solidarity with Jordan [...] in these difficult times of geopolitical instability”, said the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in a press release.

Since 2013, the EU has provided more than €1 billion in macrofinancial assistance to Jordan. The last instalment was paid in May 2023 (see EUROPE 13174/28). (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
