75 organisations call on next European Commission to publish European strategy on sufficiency

On Tuesday 26 March, 75 European environmental NGOs published a manifesto on resilience and sufficiency, calling on the next European Commission to tackle Europe’s dependence on resources in order to meet urgent security, climate and social challenges.

The organisations are specifically calling for an EU strategy targeting resource sufficiency - particularly energy sufficiency - to be published in the first year of the next European Commission mandate.

The coming European elections and the next EU institutions’ mandate will be a critical time to decide how to shape a path to resilience: by continuing to increase our dependencies and inequalities, or to put demand management at the heart of the EU strategic agenda through a sufficiency-driven approach”, says the manifesto.

According to the signatories, the Commission’s strategy should be based on an in-depth analysis of the EU’s sufficiency potential and the identification of current legislative gaps in all sectors. It should then propose an action plan to help achieve the 2030 targets and “set Europe on the right path to 2040 and 2050”.
