27/03/24 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission gave assurances, on Friday 22 March, after being questioned in a written question (E-000427/2024) tabled in February by French MEP Christophe Clergeau (S&D), that it had not been informed “either by the French authorities nor by other sources of the alleged use of unauthorised processes on natural mineral waters in France before the articles were published in the press”. This response from the European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, Stella Kyriakides, follows revelations by Le Monde and Radio France that at least a third of French brands have drawn on water contaminated either by bacteria or chemical pollutants before purifying it artificially. The European Commission is also planning an audit to verify the results of the action taken by the competent French authorities to monitor compliance with EU rules. (TM)
