On Monday 18 March, the European Innovation Council (EIC) unveiled its 2023 Impact Report, in the context of the jointly inaugurated Research and Innovation Days and EIC Summit (see other article). More specifically, the report provides an overview of the cutting-edge innovation projects and disruptive technologies identified, supported and funded by the EIC. The report also gives details of the types of investors.
The report examines the ‘Horizon Europe EIC portfolio’, i.e. the portfolio of companies supported by the EIC under Horizon Europe, as well as the longer-term impacts of the ‘full EIC portfolio’. This latter portfolio includes projects funded under the EIC’s pilot phase, which ran from 2018 to 2020, predecessor ‘SME Instrument’ Phase 2 projects, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, and Future and Emerging Technology projects, since 2014.
In terms of the impact of the ‘Horizon Europe EIC portfolio’, the report reveals that the EIC Fund, the EIC’s investment arm, has completed more than 100 rounds of investment in deep tech companies and has made co-investments worth €1.2 billion. These co-investments, the report points out, have generated more than €3.5 of additional investment for every €1 of direct investment through the EIC Fund.
The entire portfolio of companies supported by the EIC is worth almost €70 billion, an increase of more than €20 billion in just over a year. The report points out that this portfolio has attracted more than €12 billion of follow-on investments.
