EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Customs

European Parliament supports strengthening role of customs authorities

At its plenary session on Wednesday 13 March, the European Parliament adopted its negotiating position on the reform of the European Customs Code by 486 votes to 19, with 97 abstentions (see EUROPE 13356/8). Despite opposition from the ECR and ID groups, the text adopted strengthens the role of the customs authorities.

There is a critical need for a revised EU customs system. Not only must it guarantee the safety and compliance of goods entering the EU, but it must also function with utmost efficiency for businesses operating within the single market”, commented Deirdre Clune (EPP, Irish), the rapporteur, in a press release welcoming the adoption of the text.

The text introduces a thorough preliminary control, which will enable reputable companies to benefit from a reduction in controls. Platforms will have to submit information to the customs authorities on goods dispatched to the EU from third countries.

All customs authorities will use the same IT system, EU DataHub. The way they operate, cooperate with retailers and manage goods ordered online will change.

The proposed customs Data Hub is a vital step forward, but its swift implementation, alongside other key reforms, is essential to meet growing challenges”, said Ms Clune.

The dossier will be monitored by the new Parliament after the European elections in June.
