On Wednesday 13 March, MEPs adopted by 490 votes to 69 with 64 abstentions the report by Sergey Lagodinsky (Greens/EFA, German) on the Directive creating a European statute for non-profit-making associations: European cross-border associations (ECBAs).
The text is intended to enable non-profit organisations to have European legal status and thus avoid registration procedures in each country in which they operate (see EUROPE 13349/8).
According to the European Commissioner for Internal Market, Thierry Breton, this will save associations €770 million a year in administrative costs.
MEPs proposed linking the statute to an obligation to respect fundamental European values. According to Pierre Karleskind (Renew Europe, French), this will make it possible to support Hungarian civil society, “which needs this framework to pursue its activities”, or to “help women in Poland who wish to have an abortion”.
The European Parliament also adopted the report by Anne-Sophie Pelletier (The Left, French) on the regulation that will allow ECBAs to use the internal market information system and the single digital gateway (534 votes in favour, 45 against and 47 abstentions).
