13/03/2024 (Agence Europe) – A coalition of European organisations called on the European Commission, on Tuesday 12 March, the day it published its response to the climate risk assessment (see EUROPE 13369/11), to rapidly present the ‘Water Resilience Initiative’ - announced during the State of the Union address in September 2023 and withdrawn from the agenda - in order to respond to the increasing pressures on freshwater resources caused by climate change. In a joint letter, the organisations stress the essential role of water in ensuring economic, social and environmental sustainability. Despite recent proactive updates on European water policies, a comprehensive water strategy is considered essential for the Commission’s next mandate, with the Water Resilience Initiative a crucial component.
