05/02/24 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 5 February, the chairman of the European Parliament’ Committee on Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL), Dragoş Pîslaru, officially called for Amazon representatives to be denied access to European Parliament premises for as long as the American group refuses to talk to MEPs about the working conditions of its employees in the European Union. In a letter to European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, he cites three occasions on which Amazon representatives failed to cooperate: two debates at the European Parliament and an aborted mission to the group’s German and Dutch establishments. By refusing to enter into dialogue with Parliament, Amazon is “obstructing the process of democratic control” over issues such as workers’ rights and the use of algorithms to assess productivity, says Mr Pîslaru. It will be up to the European Parliament’s quaestors to decide. See the letter: https://aeur.eu/f/apo (MB/SP)
