DSA, MEPs question Commission on lack of independence of authority designated by Hungary as Digital Services Coordinator

01/02/2024 (Agence Europe)MEPs from the S&D, Greens/EFA and Renew Europe groups sent, on Wednesday 31 January, a letter to the Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, and the Commissioner for Competition, Margrethe Vestager, claiming that Hungary is in breach of EU rules on impartiality and independence regarding the appointment of the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) as Digital Services Coordinator under the DSA (see EUROPE 13317/10). The signatory MEPs claim that the NMHH’s lack of independence from government has been “widely documented in recent years by the Council of Europe and NGOs” and that this is “one of the reasons why the Article 7 procedure has been launched against Hungary to establish whether there is a serious and persistent breach of EU values”.
