01/02/24 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 1 February, with the ‘connectivity’ legislative package on digital networks and infrastructures due to be adopted on 21 February (see EUROPE 13269/9), the Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, reassured the telecommunications sector. “I will do everything I can for the sector as a whole to ensure that we are not left behind”, he said, asserting that this text would be the first “pillar” that the European Union would need for the next 5 years. “The question was what infrastructure we would need to develop. Fibre, 5G, going beyond 5G? We want to build a global vision that we all share”, he continued. The legislative package should include provisions on facilitating cross-border telecoms operations, the creation of pan-European infrastructure operators, and how to raise capital. (TM)
