11/12/23 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 8 December, the EU Council decided to extend by one year, until 12 December 2024, the sanctions against several individuals responsible for supporting armed conflict, instability or insecurity in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (see EUROPE 13232/25). Twenty-four people are subject to an asset freeze and an EU travel ban. In addition, the provision of funds, other financial assets or economic resources to or for the benefit of such persons, whether directly or indirectly, is prohibited. The EU Council is prepared to include on the list anyone who stands in the way of a consensual and peaceful solution to the 20 December elections, and to draw up a list of those who exploit the fragile situation in the DRC through the exploitation of or illegal trade in natural resources and wildlife.
