08/11/2023 (Agence Europe) – The European Parliament’s Committee on Budgets (BUDG) has unanimously approved (26 votes in favour) Belgium’s request for €2.8 million in aid from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF), following the bankruptcy of Makro Cash & Carry Belgium NV in January 2023, which resulted in the loss of 1,431 jobs. Wallonia will receive aid from the EGF for 421 workers, while Flanders has refused additional aid for its former Makro workers. The total amount of aid is €3.2 million, with the EGF covering 85% and the Walloon region the remaining 15%. The package includes job search assistance, vocational training, business advice and business start-up grants. Plenary approval is expected at the Strasbourg session from 20 to 23 November. (PLD)
