03/11/2023 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission approved, on Friday 3 November, the addition of Romanian smoked pork ‘Salinate de Turda’ to the Community register of protected geographical indications (PGIs). ‘Salinate de Turda’ is a smoked and cured pork product made from ceafă (neck), cotlet (loin), piept (belly) and pulpă (leg), which are brined in natural spring brine combined with seasoning mix, sugars and lactic starter cultures, then matured for 5-7 days, hardwood-smoked (beech-smoked) and matured/dry-cured for 20-28 days. This new designation will be added to the list of 1,661 food products already protected at EU level. (LC)
