37 projects selected by ERC will be supported by Horizon Europe to address research questions

On Thursday 26 October, the European Research Council (ERC) unveiled an indicative list of 37 research groups that will receive a total of €395 million in European funding under Horizon Europe, as part of the ERC’s ‘Synergy’ 2023 grants programme. 395 proposals were submitted for this call.

The funding will support the work of groups of excellent researchers on some of the world’s most challenging research problems, across a number of different scientific disciplines. For example, one of the selected research projects is looking at the way plants sense water, another at bat’s resistance to certain diseases, and yet another will look at reducing the risk of disasters linked to volcanic activity.

More generally, the grants will enable these groups, involving 135 researchers, to pool their skills, knowledge and resources to carry out cutting-edge research in 114 universities and research centres in 19 countries.
