EU mobilises over €26 million in emergency aid for crises in East and Central Africa

In response to the humanitarian crises in the Horn of Africa and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the European Commission is mobilising a €26.7 million package to help vulnerable people who have recently been displaced, fleeing conflict and climatic phenomena, the EU institution announced on Friday 3 November.

In South Sudan, where some 2,000 people arrive every day from neighbouring Sudan, the additional funding of €6.4 million will support the humanitarian response in border areas. 70% of new arrivals - refugees or returnees - are women and children, one in five of whom suffers from malnutrition.

The amount of €5.5 million has been earmarked for Somalia, where 2 million people are in need of emergency humanitarian aid due to conflict, flooding and the cholera epidemic.

A further sum of €1.5 million has been earmarked to boost food security in Uganda, the host country for more than 1.5 million refugees, including more than 220,000 new arrivals since January 2022.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the humanitarian situation is deteriorating, €13.3 million will be used to step up the humanitarian response against a backdrop of escalating violence.

This funding will enable humanitarian organisations, partners of the Commission’s Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO) on the ground, to deliver aid to the population. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
