European Commission updates strategic plan for development of energy technologies

On Friday 20 October, the European Commission updated for the second time its Strategic Energy Technology Plan (‘SET-Plan’), drawn up in November 2007 and amended in September 2015, with the aim of supporting cooperation in energy technology research and adapting it to the priorities of the ‘European Green Deal’ and the ‘REPowerEU’ initiative (see EUROPE 9549/10).

Now anchored in the European Research Area, the revised plan focuses on the following areas: - develop a cross-disciplinary approach (design, vocational training, analysis of societal needs, digitalisation, etc.) for the deployment of clean energy technologies; - extend the scope of technological applications to all renewable energies; - launch a specific initiative for the production of ‘green’ hydrogen: - stimulate cooperation between European technology platforms and European industrial alliances in the fields of electric batteries, clean hydrogen and photovoltaic panels in order to attract investment and contribute to the development of the regulatory framework; - provide a roadmap to monitor progress.

The SET-Plan has mobilised more than €500 million through a specific partnership financed by the Horizon Europe programme and national governments, i.e. all the countries of the European Union as well as Iceland, Norway and Turkey.
