European Commission awards “Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities” label to ten European cities

On Thursday 12 October, the European Commission announced that it had awarded ten European cities the label of the EU’s ‘Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities’ mission under Horizon Europe.

The label awarded by this European mission recognises and rewards the successful development by cities of plans known as ‘Climate City Contracts’, to achieve climate neutrality by 2030.

The aim of these plans is to facilitate access to public and private funding to achieve the objective of climate neutrality. They are drawn up by cities in collaboration with local stakeholders, including the private sector and citizens.

The cities selected are Sønderborg (Denmark), Mannheim (Germany), Madrid, Valencia, Valladolid, Vitoria-Gasteiz and Zaragoza (Spain), Klagenfurt (Austria), Cluj-Napoca (Romania) and Stockholm (Sweden).

However, all the towns that have submitted their “Climate City Contract” will receive feedback and suggestions for improvement.

The Commission examined the applications with experts, including some from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC).
