26/09/23 (Agence Europe) – The European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, met Apple CEO Tim Cook in Brussels on Tuesday 26 September to discuss the implementation of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) (see EUROPE 13244/3). “Under the Digital Markets Act, the next step for Apple and other major technology companies is to open their doors to competitors. Whether it's the e-wallet, browsers or app stores, consumers using an Apple iPhone should be able to benefit from competitive services offered by a range of suppliers,” he said. Apple was one of the first six gatekeepers designated by the Commission on 6 September, alongsideAlphabet(Google), Amazon, ByteDance(TikTok), Meta(Facebook) and Microsoft. These companies will have to comply with the DMA rules from 4 May 2024. (TM)
