22/09/23 (Agence Europe) – The revised Energy Efficiency Directive (EU) 2023/1791 (see EUROPE 13139/11) was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on Wednesday 20 September, and will come into force within 20 days. EU Member States have two years to transpose these elements into national law. The main changes include a European target of reducing final energy consumption by 11.7% by 2030, increasing annual energy savings by an average of 1.49% for 2024-2030, and prioritising vulnerable customers and social housing. It also introduces a target of reducing energy consumption in the public sector by 1.9%, extending building renovation obligations and promoting energy management systems for businesses.
