European Parliament calls on Guatemalan authorities to respect integrity of electoral process

The European Parliament has called on the Guatemalan authorities to respect the integrity of the electoral process, condemning any action, particularly by the General Prosecutor (Ministerio Público), aimed at overturning the outcome of the presidential elections, in a resolution adopted by a show of hands on Thursday 14 September in Strasbourg.

Congratulating Bernardo Arévalo and Karin Herrera of the Movimiento Semilla on their election as President and Vice-President of Guatemala (see EUROPE 13239/22), MEPs call on all public institutions and all sectors of society to support an orderly transition and transfer of power.

They demand the immediate and unconditional release of the prosecutors, judges, independent journalists and human rights defenders arbitrarily detained.

On the same day, a former municipal candidate from the Movimiento Semilla and his wife were shot dead near the border with Mexico, in circumstances that have yet to be clarified, AFP reported.
