13/09/2023 (Agence Europe) – The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, listed the main political and economic advances made at the EU/CELAC summit held in Brussels in July (see EUROPE 13225/1, 13224/1), on Tuesday 12 September 2023, during a debate in the European Parliament. He also stressed the importance of recognising the differences of opinion between Europeans, Latin Americans and Caribbean countries, particularly on the issue of Russia's military invasion of Ukraine, and of addressing the specific problems of the EU’s partners. We need to focus more on “social justice” and the fight against “inequalities”, reassuring our partners that the climate and digital transitions are “not contradictory (...) with the well-being of populations”, he said, noting that Latin America is the continent where social inequalities are most glaring.
