07/09/23 (Agence Europe) – In a letter sent on Wednesday 6 September to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the European Parliament’s intergroup on animal welfare calls on her to ensure that the revision of animal welfare legislation is included in the Commission's work programme for 2024. The Commission has been saying for months that this reform will be presented this autumn, but no date has yet been officially set (see EUROPE 13236/15). Tilly Metz (Greens/EFA, Luxembourg), Chair of the Intergroup (which brings together around a hundred MEPs), has asked Ms von der Leyen to speak out in favour of this revision during her State of the Union speech on 13 September. “Not acting on citizens’ expectations [in this area] before the upcoming European elections would be detrimental (...),” Ms Metz warns.
