On Monday 31 July, the European Commission launched a consultation on the model description of consumer profiling techniques that gatekeepers will have to apply to their main platform services under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) (see EUROPE 13215/3).
Through this consultation, the Commission is seeking comments from stakeholders on the draft model presented, which should serve to improve the transparency and accountability of profiling techniques.
This description should be independently audited and gatekeepers will be required to publish a “meaningful and non-confidential” overview. The description and overview should be updated every year. In the Commission’s view, this should ensure that in-depth consumer profiling does not become the industry norm, offering competitors the opportunity to differentiate themselves through better privacy guarantees.
The consultation will close on 15 September. A few days earlier, on 6 September, the Commission will unveil the list of companies designated as gatekeepers under the DMA. They will then have 6 months to comply. (Original version in French by Thomas Mangin)
