Negotiations in EU Council progressing on maritime security strategy

The Spanish Presidency of the EU Council has presented revised draft conclusions on the EU’s maritime security strategy (see EUROPE 13215/12), following the meeting of the working group on Wednesday 12 July.

In its compromise proposal, the Presidency proposed that the Council approve a revised EU maritime security strategy and its new action plan. It notes that both “aim to enhance the EU’s role internationally and further secure the EU’s access to an increasingly contested maritime domain, particularly in light of and the consequences of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine”.

The Spanish Presidency added that “the strategy has stimulated closer cooperation between civilian and military authorities, in particular through information exchange”. “It has helped promote rules-based governance at sea and has given a boost to international cooperation and strengthened the EU’s capacity to respond to maritime security threats”, it says.

Member State delegations were invited to send in their written comments by Friday 21 July.
